If you purchased a washer in the last few years you probably found yourself saying “They don’t make them like they used to”. For the most part this is true. Government regulations have changed the way washers work, in many cases making us think they don’t work.
Fortunately there are options for those simply looking for a washer that actually works. A washer that uses enough water to clean our clothes. Many manufacturers are starting to put override options in their controls to allow you to control the amount of water the machine uses on most cycles. In most cases the machine will default to the low water setting so you will need to be intentional about choosing the correct cycle to get the desired water level.
Speed Queen is one American Made laundry brand that has traditional washers almost perfected. All their models offer a Normal/Eco cycle that is a high efficiency cycle but all the other cycles allow you to select the wash and rinse water levels. They also allow you to have a true hot water wash outside of the Normal/Eco cycle (which is surprisingly rare).
Martin Appliance has been named the number one volume Speed Queen dealer in the entire Northeastern United States in 2016. Matching your particular laundry wants and needs is something we are passionate about and since we sell so many Speed Queen laundry products you can be confident that you can talk to someone with in depth knowledge of the Speed Queen line up.
So if you are in our market area in central Pennsylvania and are interested in buying a washer that works from a family owned appliance store that not only sells but also services everything we sell we would welcome the opportunity to show you around. We not only sell Speed Queen, we also offer other American Made laundry products from Whirlpool, Maytag, Ge and Hotpoint at prices that give you no reason to settle for an import.
What appliance do you have in your store that is American made? This is a question that we hear on a regular basis at Martin Appliance and we really do love that question. The reality is people have many different reasons for asking this question and I will cover some of them below.
Supporting American jobs is obviously one of the big reasons. Most of us know someone who is or was laid off because the store, factory or warehouse they worked in either downsized or closed. By buying an American made appliance we can personally make an impact on the success of our friends and neighbors here in the United States.
Another reason which may get less attention but is very important is related to environmental impact. Many appliances seen in national chain stores today are shipped from Asia where regulations on manufacturing are not nearly as strict as they are here in the US. Factories are much more likely to be dumping pollutants in to the air and water in other countries than they are here in the US. By buying American you not only limit these pollutants but you also limit the environmental burden caused by transporting products halfway around the world.
If you are in the market for a new appliance and have not given it much thought now is a great time to think about it. At Martin Appliance we offer one of the largest displays of American Made Appliances in Pennsylvania. There really are many options for American Made freezers, American Made dishwashers, American Made refrigerators, American Made ranges and the list goes on and on. Even American made vacuums from Maytag. We also offer BlueStar ranges which are manufactured right here in Reading, Pennsylvania. We would love to have the opportunity to show you how you can have a quality, American made appliance purchased from a local, family owned appliance store who is committed to continuing to reinvest in our community.
Have you ever been in the predicament where you have your oven preheated, the oven door wide open and a twenty pound turkey in a roasting pan in your hands and can’t quite get it over the hot oven door onto the oven rack? You may find yourself asking “Isn’t there a better way to do this?”. The restaurant and commercial baking industry have been using French Door ovens for years to eliminate this challenge. Finally this feature is available for home use from a number of appliance manufacturers.
The most recent brands to join this category are Viking Professional with their VDOF730SS French Door Double Oven. The lower oven is a standard oven door, the upper oven offers the convenience of the french door. GE offers a single french door wall oven in their Cafe series of restaurant inspired appliances – CT9070SHSS. Other brands already in this category are Blue Star, who manufactures a gas single french door wall oven in Reading Pennsylvania and American Range.
Bring out your inner chef by using equipment that for many years was only available in a commercial setting.
Many of you are familiar with the Bosch brand and the technology they offer in the many categories they are involved in. From hand tools to wiper blades Bosch has been making an impact on the many industries they touch. Major appliances have always been a focus of their efforts. What you may not have known is that Bosch manufactures most of their major appliances for the US market in New Bern, NC.
Bosch is introducing a new line of product they are referring to as Benchmark. This line will be marketed through a select group of existing dealers of Thermador appliances and will offer some unique features that have rarely been used by major appliance manufacturers. At Martin Appliance we are pleased to have been selected as one of these dealers.
The HBLP451RUC and HBLP451LUC offer a choice of right or left hinged oven doors instead of the traditional fold down door commonly found on built in ovens. This design gets the hot oven door out of the way to allow easier access to the interior of the oven.
The HIIP054U in the Bosch Benchmark line is a new magnetic induction slide in range that is designed to fit traditional range openings. As an induction range this model offers the incredible performance and control that only induction can offer. It also features a SmoothClose door similar to what was previously only available in the Thermador line.
The NITP666SUC is a new Bosch Benchmark electric induction cooktop that offers a wide range of flexibility in the use of uniquely sized cookware.

If you are noticing white buildup on the bottom of your dishwasher tub, it might be the result of hard water leaving behind limescale deposits.
This scale buildup can temporarily be cleaned by running a cycle using Citric Acid instead of dishwasher detergent.
If you are starting to notice scale buildup or staining from red sauce, put a tablespoon of citric acid in a drinking glass and place it in the center of the top dishwasher rack, then run a normal cycle. If you still see buildup or staining after the cycle is complete, you might need to sprinkle additional citric acid on the bottom of the dishwasher tub around the buildup, and optionally in the detergent dispenser and repeat the normal cycle.
Citric Acid is available at our Martin Water online store, or for pickup at any of our retail locations.
Martin Appliance highly recommends installing a Kinetico whole-house water softener to solve the scale buildup for more than just your dishwasher. Water heaters are negatively affected by scale buildup from hard water as well, and can be very costly to repair and replace. Investing in a softener is a great way to protect your water-using appliances. Contact us for a free, no-obligation water analysis to learn more about how our systems can improve your water quality.

According to the NFPA, one out of every 22 house fires in 2006-2010 involved a washer and dryer. Fire can be caused by a dryer when lint builds up in the dryer or the dryer vent. Since dryer lint is very flammable, it is important to regularly clean your dryer vent.
If your clothing is still damp at the end of a drying cycle, or if the drying cycle time is much longer than usual, there is a chance that your dryer vent might be clogged with lint.
Although Martin Appliance recommends that one of our service technicians perform this cleaning for you, here is a summary of how to clean your dryer vent if you have a dryer vent cleaning brush like this one:
Steps to Clean your Dryer Vent
- Start by making sure you clean the dryer’s lint filter before each use. It is also recommended to wash the lint filter with warm soapy water once a month to remove any residue that would attract dryer lint.
- To clean your dryer vent, begin by carefully pulling the dryer away from the wall.
- The vent duct should be visible behind the dryer – unfasten the vent from the dryer and use a long bristly dryer vent brush to reach into the vent and remove the lint build-up. Use the brush several times while rotating it to be sure that all the lint build-up is removed.
- If the other end of the vent on the outside of your house is further than the length of your vent brush, repeat the cleaning process from the outside to clean the remaining lint.
- If while cleaning you notice that you have plastic or foil-type dryer vent material, it should be replaced with semi-rigid or rigid metal duct – plastic and foil ducts easily trap excess lint and are more subject to kinks or crushing.
- Be sure to carefully reconnect all of the dryer venting before using your dryer again.

As LED lighting becomes increasingly popular in kitchen appliances, Martin Appliance did some research on retrofitting Halogen ventilation hoods with LED lights.
Zephyr is a vent manufacturer that commonly uses LED lighting in their high-end vent hoods. LEDs have a longer lifespan and lower energy usage than Halogen, and produce much less heat when in use.
An average Halogen bulb for a vent hood can be anywhere from $10 to $30 a bulb, while an LED bulb is about $40.
Not all Halogen ventilation hoods can be retrofitted with an LED. If you’re interested in seeing if your vent hood can be retrofitted, give us a call at 800-224-3612 to speak with a technician.
